PLAYLISTA: The Brothers - March 10, 2020 Madison Square Garden (Live)
One of the last large-scale concerts to take place before the pandemic started came when The Allman Brothers Band alumni teamed up as The Brothers at Madison Square Garden in New York City on March 10, 2020. While remastered video and audio of the show was rebroadcast and shared last June, the concert film/live album The Brothers / March 10, 2020 / Madison Square Garden / New York, NY featuring DVD, Blu-Ray and CDs arrives via Peach Records/The Orchard/nugs.net on July 23 with downloads also coming along with streams on nugs.net and the Amazon Prime service CODA as per Rolling Stone.
The Brothers featured co-founding drummer Jaimoe along with Duane Trucks in the role held down by his late uncle, Butch Trucks, as well as longtime ABB members Derek Trucks and Warren Haynes on guitar, bassist Oteil Burbridge and percussionist Marc Quinones. Additionally, Reese Wynans, the musician Gregg Allman replaced when the group changed their name from Second Coming to The Allman Brothers Band, was on keys with pianist and 1972 – 1976 ABB member Chuck Leavell serving as special guest.
“It was a one-off celebration of 50 years of the band and it was sold out. But I know a bunch of people who had tickets who didn’t come,” Derek Trucks told Rolling Stone’s David Browne in the days following the concert. “My parents were unable to make it. They were worried about traveling and their doctor told them not to hop on a plane to New York. So that was bittersweet in a lot of ways. You wish it had been slammed to the rafters and everyone wouldn’t have had that in the back of their mind.”
However, the show came off well with a pair of marathon sets and “Midnight Rider”/”Whipping Post” encore. Derek added “it felt good” regarding the concert and that “everyone’s head was in the right place.” A portion of proceeds from The Brothers / March 10, 2020 / Madison Square Garden / New York, NY will go towards The Big House Museum in Macon, Georgia. The building was the ABB home from 1970 – 1973 and now keeps the band’s legacy alive as their official museum.
